No, the banner is not a typo! Read on to see why the year 2017 is important to your planning for 2016…
For every business owner, the new year is a natural time for pause, and planning.
And as you know, sometimes plans and “resolutions” stick, and often- especially in the New Year- they don’t.
So how do you make a plan that feels good and…sticks? Sometimes a slightly unconventional approach, is best.
For me, it starts with a dedicated meeting to reflect and vision forward. This could be with your coach, mentor, biz partner, or another trusted source who has your back and will help you clarify your goals, without taking over.
To prime ourselves, we shared some of our favorite moments over the past year (happy dance, optional, but encouraged), and then we followed these three unconventional steps:
1. What sucked about last year?
Ok- starting the planning here might surprise you, especially since I’m a pretty upbeat person, but if you lean into this one it can actually be fun & liberating. Yeah- What was hard, a struggle, didn’t go right…sucked? It’s impossible to be an ever-growing entrepreneur and not have some less-than-ideal moments. Go ahead, recall them, list them out. Vent! If you’re far enough away from them, you may even find yourself laughing. NOW:
What did you learn?
Making mistakes is normal, but not learning from them is tragic. As I mentioned in this post a few years back, they have invaluable goodness to offer you! There is undiscovered passion, joy, confidence, and even money- yes MONEY- waiting for you in the learning.
This year, me and my partner Chris went through this exercise, and then one by one acknowledge the learning and how we can do things differently in the future. The process feels so good, and is even healing.
In case you are curious, for 2016, some learning themes included: Better systems for planning and communicating with each other, trusting my gut to avoid challenges that could have been avoided, staying in touch with inspiration, and slowing down. What are yours?
2. Plan for 2017 (AKA Vision Two Years Ahead)
No that is NOT a typo! We developed a process this year that I intend to do every year, and it was visioning out to the NEXT calendar year- from when I am writing this that’s 2017- and then working backwards from there.
If you’ve ever had BIG vision for yourself, and felt stuck about how to SEQUENCE it, it is possible you just need some more calendar space to map it all out.
When we looked to 2017, everything got easy- space for finishing a book and launching a book tour- space to craft and launch some new programs reeeeaaallly well, and much, much more. This lead to greater clarity in our 2016 planning. Now, with everything we’ve now mapped out for 2016, we can see how it leads to even bigger, brighter, bolder expressions of our larger purpose as we move into the following year. We are supercharged with excitement and connection to these long-term goals!

3. Stay Flexible
One of my favorite mantras when it comes to planning is “hold it lightly.” We top off our planning with a commitment to use the plan as it serves us, refine the plan as we are guided, and let go of the plan when it isn’t in our highest good. I wrote about this guiding principle earlier this year in my post Your 2016 (Spiritual) Marketing Plan. I cannot understate how important it is to plan ahead, and stay flexible.
