You know when you hear a new word, or one you haven't heard in a while, and suddenly- You start seeing and hearing it EVERYWHERE?
For me, over the past several weeks, that word is Mastery.
From a friend running a program with "Mastery" in the title, to a discussion with a past client about the relationship between mastery & marketing, to a musician who recommended a book called, "Effortless Mastery" to me....Apparently, I am meant to pay attention to Mastery right now.
And I think, you are too.
Mastering anything, let alone things like marketing and sales, can feel challenging, elusive, something reserved for the few...but it doesn't have to be.
Think of all of the things you are already masterful at, that you simply don't think about anymore.
Do you put effort, stress or strain into brushing your teeth? Typing on a computer keyboard? Staying in your lane when driving?
No of course not. You already know how to do these things without thinking about them. On a cellular level.
You have mastered them to a point that they are easy.
You don't question even question it.
What if growing your business could be that way too?
In one of my new favorite books, Effortless Mastery by Kenny Werner, Kenny discusses the principle of playing an instrument in a way that is just as easy as breathing. Like doing an activity while meditating. In a state that is truly effortless. While it is geared toward musicians, and I have been using the principles in my own piano playing, the teachings are profound and timeless and I have been recommending it to many coaches and entrepreneurs.
Would you love feeling "effortless mastery" when it comes to marketing your business and attracting clients?? Then, read on.
Here are 3 things that I believe are at the heart of you mastering the lasting skills of business growth, so you can live your calling over the long term, and thrive.
Believe that ease is possible
What you believe about marketing, will be so.
If you believe that it can be easy, or at least easier, you will find ways that it can be so.
If you believe that marketing and sales are inherently difficult, you will get that too.
So what would you like it to be?
It doesn't mean that you won't learn to skills, and it doesn't mean that mastery will come instantaneously, but how you interpret the journey matters.
"I am moving toward mastery," is a very different believe than, "I'm not good at this." AND "Marketing is hard."
Which person do you think would FEEL best and get the greatest RESULTS?
Understand the language
Once you believe that it is possible to have ease growing your business, understand that growing your client base, increasing sales, and multiplying your audience rests upon a language that is totally learn-able. You might call it The Language of Marketing.
Culturally, we have a lot of negative baggage with words like "Marketing" and "Sales." But the words "marketing" and "sales" have no inherent negative meaning...only the meaning we give it. And the heart of successful marketing and making sales are the same universal principles.
- Solve a problem that people are willing to pay for
- Find a tribe of people who deeply resonate with who you are and what you stand for, and struggle with said problem
- Connect with and give value to this audience on the regular
- Provide paths (or "invitations") for your audience to get more value/support/transformation from you from paid products and/or programs
- Deliver your awesomeness, and always look for ways to improve the client experience, and their results
- Do a happy dance (Ok- I added that one for good measure. Totally optional, but highly encouraged!)
In today's busy, noisy, constantly evolving technological world, we can get so overwhelmed by "what" to do, that we can lose sight of the Language of Marketing.
Any marketing activity, social media platform, email marketing campaign, etc. is designed to express this language. Master the language, and you can promote yourself and your business anytime, anywhere, with total ease (what a thought!)
Part of Marketing Mastery is the art of being flexible. You don't just "figure out" your business or your calling, and you're done!
Why? Change is happening constantly. Flow with it, while maintaining your integrity, and you are golden. Fight against it, and things might not be so easy.
What is changing exactly? In my journey as a coach and biz owner myself, I've distilled it down to these three things:
a) you change
b) your audience changes
c) the marketplace changes
Mastering the Language of Marketing means you get that Being Flexible is part of mastery and ease. You are not attached to the small stuff. You don't fixate on doing it THIS WAY of THAT WAY if it compromises your integrity, your highest good, and the highest good of your clients.
You know what is most important, and what you stand for, and you also know what isn't as important, and when to let go.
It's the difference between getting stuck on a business name and program title because it is what you want to do (but it isn't what your audience wants), to a name or title that works for you AND your audience.
I truly believe with all of my heart and soul that you can achieve mastery in business and your marketing, if you want it and are willing to break free from the hypnosis that it has to be "hard," or that you simply "can't do that."
What is beautiful about achieving effortless mastery in growing your business, is that you serve more people, more deeply, and have more energy and alive-ness to bring to living your calling. Not everyone will achieve Marketing Mastery. Not because they can't, but because of the areas outlined above, and because they may not practice the belief and patience that it can be so. But you are not everyone.
